Massage Therapy

Swedish or Relaxation massage: What most people think of when they think of the word "massage", this work combines a variety of long flowing strokes, kneading, and other techniques to induce relaxation and work on specific areas of discomfort. While massage is not a cure-all, medical research does show that it can reduce stress-response and anxiety, alleviate symptoms of depression, and create a sense of connection and well-being. Massage therapy may also reduce pain, restore range-of-motion and balance, and satisfy the human need for caring, nurturing touch. Massage can aid in recovery from injury and trauma. If you have had major surgery (e.g. joint replacement, weight-loss, amputation, mastectomy/reconstruction, or gender confirmation) or a brain injury, massage therapy can help you re-establish you sense of your own body. Receiving regular massage in a safe environment teaches your body to relax, the effects of which then carry on into your life for the long term.

Craniosacral Therapy

Ellen performing massage therapy
Craniosacral therapy is a type of bodywork in which the practitioner listens to and uses the body's own rhythms to release restrictions in the cerebrospinal system, which consists of the brain and spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, and fascial membranes that surround all the nerves in the body. By creating more space and freedom within the system as a whole, the brain can function more easily, which then serves to aid in resolving both physical and emotional issues at the deepest levels of the nervous system. I use very gentle, noninvasive touch to assess the functioning of your system, and use a variety of dialoguing methods to allow you, the client, to tune in to yourself in ways that might have been inaccessible to you previously.

In addition, craniosacral work is a peaceful and gentle way to give newborns and older children a wonderful start in life, and can help them resolve difficulties that arise from the birthing process. Babies can get twisted, wrenched around, and stuck in odd positions all while under the intense pressure of the labor contractions. Even the most natural and easy childbirth molds the child's head, and the cranial bones may get overlapped. Misalignment of the spine and cranial bones can lead to poor nursing, respiratory and digestive upsets, colic, uneasiness, and trouble sleeping; older children may manifest with behavioural problems, poor coordination, asthma, nervous stomach, or other issues. The birthing parent also experiences physical forces way beyond the normal range. The pelvic alignment changes, the lumbar spine becomes compressed, and many aches and pains are nearly ubiquitous. Many times, childbirth is experienced as a traumatic process for both parent and child. A difficult pregnancy and birth, particularly in a very medicalized setting, or with surgical intervention, can be hard to recover from. Craniosacral therapy is the most gentle way to correct the stresses of the birth. It allows your baby to experience their life with greater ease and contentment, and can easily relieve some of those common problems as well as opening both child and parent to a greater loving presence.

I have studied with both Upledger-style instructors (see as well as Biodynamic ( and am continuing to deepen my work with Etienne Peirsman at the Cranio Sacral School of the Masters.

Sessions last 60-90 minutes, and the client does not disrobe.

Polarity Therapy

Third Goddess Therapeutics Room
While Polarity Therapy is an entire natural health system all on its own, the bodywork is one area which is easily accessible and is a nice introduction to the philosophy of holistic care. Polarity Therapy addresses the interdependence of body, mind, and spirit; the importance of relationships; and the value of creating a way of life in harmony with nature. In the Polarity Model, health is experienced when energy systems function in their natural state, and when energy flows smoothly without significant blockage or fixation. When energy is unbalanced, blocked, or fixed due to stress or other factors, pain and disease arise.

In a typical session, the practitioner assesses energetic attributes using palpation, observation, and interview methods. Sessions usually take 60-90 minutes, do not require disrobing, and involve soft touch, some rocking, as well as some point-specific touch.

Physical contact may be light, medium, or firm. In the session, the practitioner supports the client in increasing self-awareness of subtle energy sensations, which are often expressed as tingling, warmth, expansion, or wave-like movement. The results of Polarity sessions vary, and may include profound relaxation, an understanding of energetic patterns and their implications, and relief from numerous problematic situations such as hypertension, anxiety attacks, and breathing disorders.

Minimal Movement Therapy™

Minimal Movement Therapy™ is excellent for re-introducing touch to people who have been hurt by vigorous massage techniques, who are medically fragile, or in a lot of pain. It is softly reassuring to clients who have had bad experiences with touch. It is non-invasive and yet highly attentive. It is listening to the client on the deepest, non-verbal level, allowing their body to re-equilibrate gently and easily. By engaging the brain and nervous system on a different level, we can facilitate shifts in ways that are supportive, comfortable, compassionate, and energetically neutral.

Minimal Movement Therapy™ combines knowledge of physical anatomy with sensitive touch, visualization, breath work, intention, patience, and communication with the client at many levels. It is based in polarity therapy, combined with craniosacral work, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, and massage work. MMT is a technique to be used as part of an integrative whole-body treatment. By allowing the body to unwind in its own way and at its own pace, the client feels unhurried. There is no rush to perform, no “gold standard” of measured improvement.

Intuitive and Shamanic Work

Rapid changes can sometimes be facilitated in the healing journey by "tuning in" to the intuitive side. Energy can become congested in certain areas of the body that may have to do with injuries, unresolved trauma, past life issues, or soul fragmentation, producing focused pain, tension, stiffness, or a 'stuck' feeling. At times it feels as if the opposite has happened, in that the client feels enervated, confused, "spaced out", or listless. By the use of channeling, guided visualizations, breath work, dialog, and other methods, the practitioner can sometimes provide insight to the client that will aid their reflections along their personal journey. Ceremonial and intuitive work available upon request.

Many people are plagued with low-level health concerns that never reach crisis proportions, yet they never feel really well either. Chronic inflammatory conditions can arise from the artificial electronic bombardment we absorb every day. People are subjected on a daily basis to many electromagnetic fields for our work (computers), entertainment (televisions, video games), and communication (cell phones), as well as sub-optimal living and working places under power lines, near broadcast towers, and other strong fields. We have nerve endings on the soles of our feet which are specifically designed to physically ground our nervous systems, but how often do we get out and put our bare feet on the ground?

Earthing is a way of electrically grounding your body if you do not have access to bare earth on a regular basis. With nearly twenty years of research behind it, there is ample evidence that earthing/grounding can reduce inflammation and pain, alleviate depression, promote healthy sleep, reduce blood viscosity, and speed athletic recovery, as well as help with immune disorders, wound healing, chronic pain, and hormonal symptoms. You can be grounded during a session or take home a product.

CLINICAL PRECAUTIONS: If you are taking blood thinners, insulin, hormones, pain medications, or psychiatric medications, you must consult with your doctors before embarking on any new health or self-care program. Medication levels may need to be adjusted if you begin earthing. Try simply going barefoot on bare earth for ten to twenty minutes at a time on a daily basis and see if it makes a difference to how you feel in your body and mind. Check in frequently with your physician to monitor medication levels.
